Doral, Fla. 鈥� Haydee Gomez Garofalo, who earned her MBA at 黑料老司机 in 2015, was honored as the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges Alumna of the Year on Friday at the organization鈥檚 annual conference.

Gomez is the founder of Gelato Gourmet and the CEO of Bosco Factory. She manages operations, while her brother and gelato chef Gelatero Gomez oversees flavor development.

The idea of creating an artisan dessert company struck Garofalo while she was working at a gelato store in Toronto.

鈥淚 just fell in love with the concept, and I decided I wanted to have my own store,鈥� she explained.

Gelato Gourmet was launched in 2014, selling homemade natural Italian ices in Doral Farmers Market every Sunday. By the end of the year, the company had expanded to nine new farmers’ market stands in Miami Dade and Broward County. In January of 2015, rapid growth allowed the company to open the first gelato store in Weston, FL, and a new division of events and catering services for private parties and corporate functions.

In 2016, due to the increased sales to other restaurants and hotels, they expanded the operation to a frozen dessert manufacturer. Recently in 2022, Gelato Gourmet was sold to an investor group, and Haydee Gomez recently launched Bosco Factory – a company dedicated to handcrafted frozen desserts to serve the food service industry in South Florida.

The first question was, 鈥淲here do you make it?鈥� said Gomez, whose company includes a full-service Gelato Coffee Shop in Weston. 鈥淲e want to show people that everything is made from scratch, and they can see it in our store.鈥�

She said she recommends MAU to anyone with an idea who wants to put it in black and white, build a business plan, and go forward to build their dream.

黑料老司机 Alumni Association Holds Inaugural Golden Gala

Celebration of alumni raises money for scholarship fund

Doral, Fla. – The 黑料老司机 Alumni Association, a 501c3 non-profit organization, hosted its inaugural Golden Gala at the Intercontinental Hotel at Doral on Saturday, March 12. The event recognized MAU university alumni and supporters, with proceeds benefitting the MAU Alumni scholarship fund.

鈥淭he alumni association put together a wonderful celebration that I think everyone enjoyed,鈥� said MAU President Dr. Aristides Maza Duerto. 鈥淲e appreciate the graduates and friends of the university who attended, and we鈥檙e already making plans for next year鈥檚 event.鈥�

The MAU Alumni Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was launched to keep all past, current, and future students connected while also raising money to benefit the alumni association scholarship fund.

In addition to dinner, the first annual Golden Gala featured a rousing DJ performance that got everyone on the dance floor, and a sold-out silent auction that included travel vouchers and Arsht Center tickets. The evening鈥檚 keynote speaker was Doral City Councilman Pete Cabrera.

Students can attend in-person or virtually in real-time

Doral, Fla. 鈥� 黑料老司机 (MAU) now offers its graduate classes in an online synchronous learning format, with students participating in real time either virtually or in-person.

鈥淭his format allows students to embark on the learning path together, whether they are on campus or online,鈥� explained Dr. Aristides Maza Duerto, president of MAU. 鈥淭heir instructors are delivering class content and supporting students in real-time, no matter where the students are located. This creates opportunities for personal engagement not otherwise available in online learning models.鈥�

Most online learning is asynchronous, which does not allow for the same level of interaction and connection, since students participate in class activities on their own schedule, independent of instructors and other students.

Synchronous classes support MAU鈥檚 ongoing efforts to create a strong and vibrant student community, bringing students together even when they are not in the same location. This approach also fosters more responsive exchanges between students and instructors, which can deepen a student鈥檚 level of understanding of the coursework.

鈥淥ne of the greatest benefits to our students is the real-world industry experience shared by our expert faculty,鈥� noted Maza Duerto. 鈥淭his model provides students with live access to their instructors to deepen their understanding of the subject matter, and it also allows for greater interaction with their classmates.鈥�
